How to Stay Safe in Las Vegas, NV

According to an FBI report on Crime in the United States, Nevada ranked second for the number of violent crimes and that number may be on the rise.

In 2011, Nevada was calculated to have 912 rapes, 4,299 robberies, and 9,957 assaults per 100,000 people. By 2012, that number rose to 931 rapes, 4,918 robberies, and 10,790 assaults, according to algorithms on USA.com.

Why the High Crime Rate?

For many people, it’s easy to assume that Nevada has a higher crime rate because of the casinos. However, Emmanuel Barthe, associate professor of criminal justice at the University of Nevada believes it is because of the sheer number of people the casinos attract.

Statistics show nearly 40,000,000 visitors came to Las Vegas in 2013. With more people together, there are more opportunities for crime.

What You Can Do To Reduce the Risk

Based on current crime data, Nevada residents have a 1 in 165 chance of becoming a victim of violent crime, and a 1 in 36 chance of experiencing property crime. Fortunately, you can reduce your chances of being a victim by taking a few precautionary steps:

If you’re walking:

  • Avoid walking alone. If necessary, ask hotel or casino security to escort you. If you have to walk alone, stay on well-lit walkways that face traffic.
  • Avoid places where attackers may hide, such as overgrown pathways and spaces between parked cars. Additionally, avoid areas where you might be cornered.
  • If you think you’re being followed, change directions or cross the street. Walk toward other people or occupied buildings.
  • Wear clothing and shoes that you can run in.

If you’re driving:

  • Make sure all doors are locked and windows are rolled up whenever you leave your vehicle. Have your keys ready to enter the vehicle quickly.
  • Double-check under your car or in your backseat to make sure no one is hiding there. Install and activate any anti-theft devices such as an alarm or lock.
  • Do not leave any valuable items in the seats. If necessary, hide items in the trunk of the car. Park in well-lit areas, and avoid underground and enclosed parking lots whenever possible.

If you’re at home:

  • Keep your doors locked at all times, even if you’re at home.
  • Sliding door locks are easy to break. Secure these doors with a strong dowel, or rod, which you can wedge in the track. Cut back tree limbs that could help thieves climb into second story windows.
  • Keep all entrances and yards well lit.
  • Do not hide house keys in mail boxes, planters, or under doormats. If keys are lost, change locks as soon as possible.

Most importantly, stay alert! Being aware of your surroundings and knowing the risks involved can help you stay on top of the situation. If you feel that you are in danger, call 911 or contact your local police.

What If You Have to Bail Someone Out of Jail?

While taking precautionary steps can help reduce the risk of becoming a victim of a crime, these steps will do little good if you or family members become involved in a crime.

Even minor felonies such as a DUI and disorderly conduct could lead to jail time, and chances are likely that someone you know will  be  arrested   whether they’re at fault or not. This is good for keeping down crime rates in Las Vegas, but it’s bad for those who made a few mistakes and are now facing imprisonment.

Fortunately, you can post bail on behalf of your loved one, so he or she doesn’t have to serve jail time while waiting for a court date. A judge will determine bail amount based on the following:

  • Past criminal record Seriousness of the crime
  • Likelihood of the defendant leaving the area to avoid the trial

In some cases, individuals are released on their own recognizance, so no bail is necessary.

Speak with a lawyer to reduce bail as soon as possible; this may require a special hearing. Hire a professional bondsman to post bail on your behalf.
